Elijah Roth is an industrial designer and 3D artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Portland, Oregon, he has a background in art and is otherwise self-taught. In 2024 he opened the studio Certain Rain, focusing on lighting fixture design.

Certain Rain
2024 - Ongoing

I founded my design practice Certain Rain in the spring of 2024.

It was initially conceived as an experiment, to learn and experience the process of bringing a design to market. Rather than pursuing a post-graduate degree in Industial Design, I opted to take a hands-on approach. I covered all aspects of operating the studio: design, prototyping, manufacturing, assembly, marketing and documentation.


After two years, I’ve developed an efficient infastructure for manufacturing my designs. Early on, I discovered that laser-cut sheet metal was a highly flexible and affordable process for manufacturing a material that I was interested in: sheet metal.
Sheet-metal is a traditionally utilitarian material, used typically for structural and non-ornamental purposes. It is accessible both from a design and economic perspective. Manufacturering is fast, inexpensive, and flexible for production of low-volume orders.

Netto Lamp
2024

The Netto lamp was the first design released by Certain Rain. It launched the studio and set the tone for the visual and material direction.
The Netto has a strong visual presence despite having a very small footprint of 2.75”x 4.25”. It was envisioned for small apartments, for users who love collecting objects of adoration, but also have a desire for order and organization.
The diffuser design is a three-part assembly in photopolymer resin, printed using stereo lithography. A 10% mixture of white dye is added to the resin to acheive a translucent appearance.

Secha  Lighting System
2025

The Secha lamp is composed of an array of curved aluminum sheets surrounding a frosted acrylic diffuser. 

The lamp constructs an organic form through structural geometry.



The lamp is constructed from interlocking fins (3) joined by a brackets (2,4) and hidden by a cap on top(1). Four countersunk screws secure the brackets and fins, while an additional bracket (6) below provides a second point to stabilize. 

The assembly sits on top of a polycarbonate diffuser (6) secured to an aluminum lower cap (7) which connects to the steel rod, leading to the base.
The Secha lamp started as a commision for a vintage boutique Benthos, in Chinatown.
The form was inspired by the wooden structure used to create Japanese paper lantern shades.
The lamp was designed to be completely dissasembled and fit into a 14”x14”x8” box.

A custom floor dimmer was developed, featuring an on/off button and dimming dial. A matching aluminum dial and cover plate attach to the top of an insulating plastic housing, 


The floor lamp version was adapted to a ceiling pendant, with an altered shape to accommodate standard E26 bulbs.

Opal Sconce
2025


The Opal sconce is the third design by Certain Rain and completes the first collection. Borrowing the organic language of the Secha lamp, It uses four aluminum plates joined at a central point to bounce light off the wall. As a plug-in sconce, installation is extremely minimal, simply hang on a screw or nail.
The Opal sconce utilizes manual bending and press-fit components assembled with a hydraulic press to create its form. Starting from a flat cut-out, a tab is bent to 121°, then press-fit into a .25” bracket. A bracket is fit in-between to interface with a light socket and hang on the wall through a small hole.

Komune
2025

A custom installation was commisioned by Komune for their boutique on Orchard St. An extra-large and miniature Secha pendant were daisy-chained in series.

Elbow Bread
2024

Four custom fixtures for downtown bakery Elbow Bread. 

Working with limited clearance between a display shelf and a pre-existing ceiling mount box, a compact design was developed.

One Illuminates
2026

Client: One Illuminates

A product rendering set for architectural lighting design firm One Illuminates. Custom textures were generated based on scans of a variety of material samples from the manufacturer.

Utilized AI tools to generate in-situ images of upcoming collection. Using base images from One Illuminates archive of architectual lighting projects, a set of new fixtures were injected into the scene.

Quad Table
2025

Client: Mike Ruiz Serra

Originally produced in white and black, the client requested a visualization of the Quad Table in four new colorways.

The unique molded fiberglass material was simulated based on image references and an accurate recreation of the table was digitally sculpted. Through an accurate simulation of lighting and material, colors were picked by the designer without the need for expensive material prototyping.

The existing product photographs of the table in black and white were re-created in Blender, then a tint of the desired color was applied.

Vintage LC2
2026

Personal Work

Recreation of a vintage LC2 sofa by Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand to test AI upscaling ability in the creation of last-mile photo-realistic material details.

The upscaler is able to quite accurately simulate aged leather, as well as place seams and piping closely to real-life cushion construction.
